Ooh-Arr! They Say It’s Your Birthday!
Another great night at the Comedy and it was a double whammy. Our gig and to celebrate Karen’s birthday.
Learning from the last experience, Simon got a set of wheels for his amp and man did it make a difference. Unfortunately we weren’t completely free from trouble. The bass drum was so heavily gaffa-taped up and worn that JD’s mallet kept sticking to it. The only solution was to get more gaffa and tape up the worn/sticky parts. Problem was the promoter didn’t have any. So after sound check we were on a gaffa tape hunt at 7:15pm in the centre of town on a Saturday…
…not the easiest task! Luckily some people hadn’t left for the gig and they said they would bring some along just in case. During our search we found ourselves in the shop that still is or was Regent Sound Studio (didn’t check the name). There was a band playing in there and one of the dudes in there said they didn’t sell any but he would give us some. So with our coke bottle wrapped with gaffa tape we had time to grab dinner before we were due on.
The promoter warned us he thought it might be a quiet night and it looked so. The first few singers played to practically no-one. Since the Comedy won’t open the bar unless there is enough people, that was closed too….Then everyone started to turn up 🙂 A barman was sent down and we got ready to rock!
Since it was also Karen’s birthday, a cake had been prepared and a little interlude had been set for halfway through the set: a standard then a countrified version of Happy Birthday! Opinions are probably divided as to whether this is musically acceptable conduct, but it was pretty amusing.
The rest of the set went smoothly and the makings of a new song appeared to go down well. After we had played and the promoter had left, a DJ was sent down so that the party could carry on. Excellent night and a great venue.
Many thanks go to Karen for celebrating her birthday with us, Miriam for sorting out the cake and presentation, Stephen for bringing some gaffa, the dude in Regent Sound for giving us some gaffa and Nic for some excellent photo’s. Many thanks also go to everyone who came to see us and help made it a great night.
